Recent studies show that it is in fact safe to recycle aerosol cans. So recycling centers that did not accept spray cans in the past will likely accept them now. In fact, according to this comprehensive study that was custom-built by a broad industry partnership revealed that nearly 70% of Americans can recycle empty aerosol containers and spray cans at their curb or at a local recycling center. Over 45 different types of packaging was studied, and as it turns out, they are all safe to recycle.

This study was organized by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and directed by Resource Recycling Systems (RRS) and Moore Recycling Associates. Sponsors for this study includes the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), The Aluminum Association (TAA), the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), and the Steel Recycling Institute (SRI), and a sector of the American Iron and Steel Institute.
