Interesting Facts About Airplane Recycling

Metal is an astonishing and remarkable resource. It can be reused over and over again, infinitely. This means that anything our society constructs out of metal can always be dismantled, melted down, and repurposed. Of the many commodities constructed of metal, one of the most metal-containing are airplanes. Airplanes mostly contain iron and steel, but they also contain a long list of other metals and alloys. From single pilot and commercial planes, to aircraft carriers, hangers, and more, all of these assets contain massive quantities of metal and alloy, as they are primarily constructed of such.

So what happens when these assets get old, become outdated, or breakdown? Fortunately, there is a national initiative to recycle airplanes and aircraft equipment. Continue reading to learn some really interesting information about airplane recycling, and then share them with your peers to encourage them to recycle scrap metal!

Recyclable Parts of an Airplane

In the airline recycling industry, when a plane is decommissioned, it is broken down into parts that can be reused or recycled. The most valuable parts of an airplane are the engines and related mechanical systems. Other parts that are dismantled include landing gears, electronic devices, aluminum, wires, titanium and steel alloys, carbon fiber composites, and other metal components. The outer shell of the airplane is also valuable, and retrieved for repurposing applications. Non-metal airplane components are recovered as well, such as textiles, carpet, seats, foam, fluids, and more.

Repurposed Airplane Parts

After the metal components are retrieved from a plane, they can be melted down and repurposed into a wide range of new commodities, such as televisions, circuit boards, and computers. Other parts, like seats and plumbing, are reused in other commissioned aircrafts, so long as they are still in good condition and meet all industry requirements. In fact, it is becoming more common, and even standard practice, to retire airplanes earlier than normal in order to reuse parts. This has been proven to generate more revenue than selling a plane intact.

Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA)

The Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) is important to the worldwide initiative of recycling and conserving our natural resources. They are a global, non-profit trade association dedicated to encouraging and pursuing the best environmental practices for aircraft recycling and salvaging. Initially inducted in 2006 for the purpose of promoting sustainable management of end-of-life aircraft engines and airframes, the AFRA is fully-immersed in all aspects of environmentally-conscience, end-of-life commercial airplane processing.

How to Recycle Your Junk Car in Indianapolis

There are many reasons why someone might have a junk car or automotive scrap on their hands. Perhaps they never got around to fixing up that old classic in the garage, and now they are left with a chassis and various non-refurbished auto parts. Or maybe they purchased a property with an old rusted tractor in the back, inherited a barn full of vintage farming equipment, or totaled their vehicle in a recent accident. Regardless of why a person has a junk car to get rid of, the process of doing so couldn’t be simpler!

Continue reading to learn the easier and most profitable (that’s right! Profits!) way to recycle your junk car or automotive scrap in Indianapolis.

Assess What You Have

When thinking about recycling your junk car, keep in mind that auto recyclers accept much more than just cars. Most companies also take automotive scrap, such as parts, frames, power tools, and wheels. They will also accept any other motorized vehicle, such as tractors, motorcycles, boats, forklifts, and anything else that runs (or ran on) fuel. These items are accepted whether they operate or not.

Locate Proof of Ownership

Once you know what it is that you wish to recycle with an auto recycling company, your next step is to figure out how to prove ownership of the assets. In order to sell a junk car, you will need to locate the title of the vehicle. In some cases, auto recyclers will accept alternative forms of ownership proof in place of a title, such as the car’s registration. You must check first to see what your options are.

Request a Quote

Did we mention that most auto recyclers pay you for junk cars and automotive scrap? It’s true! In fact, you can get paid cash on the spot for anything metal and automotive-related. Expect more of a profit for complete junk cars and catalytic converters! So this means that your next step in the process is to begin looking around for the best quotes. Collect a list of auto recyclers in your area, and get on the phones to request free estimates. For larger vehicles and cargoes, you may need to visit the complex for on-site weight assessments.

Mining and Production of Aluminum Ore

Aluminum is a metal that is derived from the Earth’s crust. Aluminum metal is a silver-like in color, as well as, malleable, nonmagnetic, and ductile. These desirable properties provide a wide range of advantages for society, which in turn gives aluminum infinite applications in various industries all across the world, including manufacturing, construction, electronics, automotive, food and beverage, medical technology, art, and much more. In fact, it is hard to identify an industry that does not rely on aluminum metal in some form or another.

But did you know that the process of mining and producing aluminum takes more energy than any other metal? It’s true! The amount of energy used to produce just 4 cans of soda is hypothetically equal to filling up a single soda can with gasoline.

Here are some additional aluminum facts that will make you think twice before tossing your next soda can into the trash:

♻ Soda and Beer

Among all of society, an average of 200 billion aluminum cans are consumed in just soda and beer alone. This number breaks down to 6,700 cans per second! Another way to comprehend this gigantic value: hypothetically, we could wrap a single-file line of cans around the perimeter of the world every 17 hours.

♻ Energy Consumption

To produce 1 million tons of aluminum cans from natural materials, 5 million tons of bauxite ore is required. This has the energy equivalency of 32 million barrels of crude oil! In contrast, recycling aluminum cans saves all of our natural bauxite deposits, as well as, more than 75% of the energy. It also reduces nearly 75% of the related pollutant emissions.

♻ Aluminum Recycling

Aluminum cans are 100% recyclable and can be recycled, infinitely! In fact, nearly 75% of all the aluminum ever produced is still being used to this very day. An average of 105,800 aluminum cans are recycled every minute in the United States. In 2011 alone, enough aluminum was recycled to have produced 13 aircraft carriers!

Recycling just 1 aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a laptop computer for 4 hours or power your television for 1 hour. That is a lot of saved energy! If you recycle aluminum for just one year, it is virtually equivalent to 6 years of power!

Where to Recycle Aluminum

Don’t just stop at cans! Aluminum comes in all sorts of versions. From power tools and electronics, to junk cars, appliances, sheet metal, and more, aluminum can be recycled in any form or condition! All you have to do is contact a local and reputable Indianapolis metal recycling center to recycle your junk metal for cash on the spot! That’s right; recycling metal earns you instant cash!

How to Recycle Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metal

If you are interested in contributing to the preservation of our Earth’s natural resources, all you have to do is start recycling! Many materials can be recycled, including plastic and paper; but one of the most important elements to repurpose is metal. All metal fits into one of two categories: ferrous and nonferrous. Regardless of your metal commodities, they can both be recycled and reused, over and over again.

Ferrous metals are metals such as steel and iron. This includes scrap metal from cars, food cans, appliances, and more. This type of scrap metal is always high in demand, and continues to grow exponentially each year. Nonferrous scrap metal is made from the waste of metals like aluminum, copper, brass, lead, titanium, nickel, and more.

How to Tell the Difference

In order to distinguish ferrous from non-ferrous metals is to perform a manual test. To perform this test, all you need is a strong magnet. You see, as mentioned, ferrous metals retain magnetic qualities, and non-ferrous metals do not. So if a magnet sticks to your metal, it contains iron, which also means it is ferrous metal. If the magnet does not attract, the metal does not contain iron, which means it is non-ferrous.

Ferrous Metals:

Stainless Steel
Iron
Carbon Steel
Mild Steel
Cast/Wrought Iron
Iron

Non-Ferrous Metals:

Copper
Aluminum
Brass
Lead
Tin
Titanium
Zinc
Nickel

Non-Ferrous Precious Metals:

Gold
Silver
Platinum

Exotic Non-Ferrous Precious Metals:

Cobalt
Bismuth
Beryllium
Zirconium
Cadmium
Mercury
Tungsten

Why Does Stainless Steel Rust?

Whether power tools, cutlery, or appliance, our stainless steel assets are highly valuable to us. And although the name “stainless” implies that your steel will be tarnish-resistance, it is not. Instead, it is a chromium-based metal that can easily corrode if it is not properly maintained. So when you first see the signs of rust formation, it is only natural to feel disappointed and frustrated. But there is no need to worry about rusty stainless steel, because it can be removed and prevented using the proper methods.

Continue reading to learn what causes rust to form, as well as, how to remove rust from stainless steel.

By understanding the process of rust formation on metal, particularly stainless steel, you can better protect your possessions from such tarnishing in the future. Rust formation on metal is known as oxidation, which fundamentally occurs as a result of oxygen exposure.

Rust Formation on Stainless Steel

In the case of stainless steel, when chromium is exposed to oxygen, it forms an invisible layer around the exterior known as chromium oxide. This layer of chromium oxide is actually an advantage, as it protects the outer surface of the steel from stains and you guessed it, rust. This is where lack of maintenance can become an issue. You see, when stainless steel is not properly cared for, this layer of chromium oxide will be prone to damage; and if it is damaged, it provides the opportunity for rust to form.

What can damage the chromium oxide layer? Using the wrong cleaners, such as ones that contain alcohol or other harsh chemical substances, can quickly rip the layer away. Solutions that contain ammonia or mineral spirits can also cause a significant amount of damage to the protective layering. I tis important to use the proper methods to clean your stainless steel to avoid jeopardizing the structural properties of your stainless steel.

How to Properly Care for Stainless Steel

All surfaces require daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning, and your stainless steel is no different. On a daily basis, you should be gently wiping the surface using a microfiber cloth and warm water. This will eliminate and manage dust, dirt, debris, and fingerprints.

For dirtier surfaces, or on a weekly basis, use a mild dish detergent and warm water to cleanse the metal. Then rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly with a clean, dry rag. Store-bought stainless steel cleaners are also effective and safe.

On a periodic basis, such as every 3 to 6 months or so, it is wise to polish your stainless steel. This is especially important for appliances and fixtures, like refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, faucets, and sinks. Use can use a store-bought stainless steel polishers, such as disposable wipes or liquid solutions.

How to Remove Rust From Stainless Steel

To remove small or minor areas of rust from stainless steel, you will need 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 cups of warm water. Combine these two ingredients to make a paste, and then apply it to the affected area in the direction of the grain using a circular motion. Use a damp paper towel to rinse the area clean. For larger areas of rust, see our blog, “How to Clean Rusty Stainless Steel” for a full step-by-step instructional guide.

Beneficial Scrap Metal Recycling Tips

Indianapolis Metal Recycling Center 317-244-0700

Indianapolis Metal Recycling Center 317-244-0700

There are numerous benefits to scrap metal recycling. Cash profits, re-purposing old goods, and preserving natural resources all make the top of the list. Even better news is that all metals and metal alloys can be reprocessed, which makes finding some to recycle is easier than placing cash in your pocket! Continue reading to learn some valuable scrap metal recycling tips that can help you raise money and support a vital cause.

You Can Recycle All Metals and Alloys

All metals and their alloys can be melted down and reprocessed into new goods. Furthermore, there are endless commodities that contain metal, which means many possessions can be recycled and reused. Vehicles, motorized assets, appliances, electronics, furniture, power tools, sheet metal, metal art and décor, and more are just a small preview of examples of items that contain recyclable constituents.

Ferrous and Non-Ferrous

Metal is categorized into two different types: non-ferrous and ferrous. Ferrous metal contains iron, as the term “ferrous” literally means “containing iron.” This means that non-ferrous metals are those that do not contain iron. Non-iron alloys are the most popular to recycle because they are easy to haul in, and easy for the company to reuse.

Some examples of such metals include aluminum, copper, tin lead, zinc, nickel, and titanium. Even some alloys, such as brass, are categorized as non-ferrous. Some commodities that are made up from these minerals include batteries, soda cans, catalytic converters, compressors, and car wheels. The most popular recycled ferrous metal is steel, which is a carbon-containing iron alloy.

Choose Your Recycling Center Wisely

Take note that when it comes to recycling ferrous metal commodities, it is important to choose a scrap metal recycling center that retains the proper technologies and resources to process iron alloys. Not all scrap yards will accept ferrous metals for reasons of recycling. If you wish to recycle ferrous metals, such as steel, make sure you call ahead to ask a scrap yard if they recycle these kinds of materials. Some metal salvaging companies will accept prepared and unprepared steel; while others do not have the market to accept steel and iron alloys.

Helpful Hints for Metal Recycling

If you want to do your part and begin recycling within your community, the best place to start is right at home. Keep in mind the things you often use in your home already that are made of metal that can be recycled. Items such as soda cans, appliances, tools, tin foil, jewelry, and batteries are common metal goods people use every day. Next time you are spring cleaning, think about these types of materials you would normally consider trash, and recycle them instead.

Also, if you have large appliances you want to get rid of or trash, such as water heaters, washer and dryers, or lawn mowers, call a local Indianapolis scrap metal recycling center to see if they offer pick up services. This way you are still doing your part for the environment, without even breaking a sweat! They will haul away your metal commodity, and often times, pay you cash on the spot in return!

Once you figure out that recycling scrap metal can be easy, there is no end to the environmental contribution you can offer. There is no need to throw away old appliances, junk cars, electronics, soda cans, and any other metal-containing commodities, when they can all be reprocessed and reused. Just like all recycling, scrap metal recycling is infinitely beneficial to our planet.

It’s Good for the Environment

Metal is something that is derived from the earth, and then processed into all sorts of alloys and commodities. Unfortunately, the metal refining process produces massive amounts of poisonous emissions that are harmful to the surrounding environment. These toxic gases are a major contributor to air pollution. Recycling, reprocessing, and reusing metal helps to reduce the need to mine for new ores, which lowers the emissions output of the industry. Healthier air is better for all living organisms.

It Conserves Energy

Metal recycling also helps to conserve energy since there is a reduced need to mine for new metal ores and natural minerals. The process of extracting such elements consumes a large amount of energy and fuel, which can impact the environment and the local economies. Furthermore, there is a limited amount of precious natural ores and minerals on our planet, and recycling metal helps to preserve these natural occurrences.

It Provides Jobs

Not only does the metal recycling industry help promote healthier air, energy conservation, and environmental protection, it also helps stimulate the local economy by providing more employment opportunities. Job creation can have a major impact on the local economy, and helps thousands of struggling families all over the country.
