Scrap Metal Recycling is Important

Scrap metal recycling is one of the most important initiatives you can partake in within your community. Not only does it positively impact your local economy in various ways, but it also has a significant impact on the world! All metal is 100% recyclable, which means it can be melted down and repurposed over and over again without losing any of its valuable properties and functions. From aluminum and tan to iron, steel, copper, brass, and more, finding metal to recycle is something anyone can do.

Let the Scrap Metal Scavenger Hunt Begin!

Below are some of the places you can start looking for scrap metal in your home and surrounding community. Gather your scrap metal and then bring it to your local Indianapolis scrap metal recycling center for your instant cash payout!

Around The House

Finding scrap metal recyclable goods around the house is easy to do! Just think about all of the average household commodities that contain metal, such as beverage and food cans. These are typically made of aluminum and tin, which are some of the most sought after recyclable metals. Small kitchen appliances or another recyclable metal item, such as blenders, toasters, microwaves, and pressure cookers, as well as other things, like knives, cutlery, pots and pans, and similar commodities. Cast iron skillets, copper plumbing fixtures, and even precious metal jewelry can all be recycled!

If you have large appliances to get rid of, like water heaters, boilers, refrigerators, or washing machines, these too can be recycled for the metal constituents within them. Additional items around the house that can be recycled for metal include electronics like stereos, computers, laptops, and cellphones, as well as common items like metal patio furniture, metal, rain barrels, auto parts, motorized landscaping equipment, lawnmowers, and generators.

At Work

You can also find lots of recyclable metal items at work too, so long as you have permission from your superiors first. Everything that can be found within the house is likely something you can find at work as well. Additional office and workplace items that can be recycled for metal include metal desks, metal chairs, metal tables, obsolete machinery (typewriters, landline phones, etc.), and old or broken electronics, like copiers and fax machines.

If you cannot gather scrap metal commodities from your place of employment, just go around your community and ask some of the local businesses. Walk into any business and ask a manager if they have any old, damaged, broken, or junked items that they would like to get rid of, such as cash registers, steel pallet racking, shopping carts, conveyors, staunches, steel shelving, and so forth.

Treatment centers, hospitals, and medical offices are additional places to look for recyclable scrap metal items. Schools and educational facilities are great places to ask too! And some shooting ranges will give you their brass shells casings!

Construction Sites

Construction and renovation sites are prime sources for recyclable scrap metal. Visit a construction site or renovation zone and asked to see a manager. As the construction manager or person in charge if they have any junked items that they wish to get rid of, such as scaffolding, piping, plumbing fixtures, power tools, construction equipment, sheet metal, and anything else made of metal. They should be jumping for joy to have free junk haul-away provided for them by you!

Tell us how your scrap metal scavenger hunt went! Contact Zore’s Recycling at 317-244-0700 to sell scrap metal in Indianapolis for cash on the spot. We offer free-haul away for bulk steel materials, like junk cars and large construction equipment.

Scrap Metal Prices and the Factors That Impact Them

The value of scrap metal largely depends on three factors: market value, weight, and purity. The price for a certain type of metal starts at a daily-fluctuating value on the market. From there, the purer your metal is, the more it is worth, and the more you have of it, the more you earn.

For instance, one ounce of 14 karat gold is worth less than one ounce of 24 karat gold. And on a day where gold is priced higher on the market, one ounce will render more profit than on a day where the values are ranked low.

Market Values for Scrap Metal

Once you have your weight and purity, you can look up the market value for your metal and do the math. Simply multiply the two values together for a rough estimate of what your scrap metal freight is worth. You can find current metal prices online for free. A recommended site is InfoMine.com.

Metal Analyzing Produces More Accurate Scrap Values

In order to know exactly what metals are in your scrap, you need a metal analyzer, which runs in the ‘tens of thousands of dollars’ range. For this reason, it is best to get the information you need (current market value and weight), and then visit an Indianapolis metal recycling center or scrap yard to have your scrap loads tested. This will give you an accurate estimation of your metal value.

Example of Calculating Scrap Value:

▷ Current Market Value for Copper = $2.14 p/LB USD
▷ Total Weight = 14.77 LBS.
► Estimated Worth = $31.61 USD

Look for Scrap Metal Buyers in Indianapolis

Once you have an estimated worth, you can start to shop around for buyers. Keep in mind that your estimated worth is just an estimation, and not necessarily an approximation of what you will receive in cash profit from a junk metal buyer or scrapper. Call around to several places to get quotes from buyers.

Look for Indiana metal recycling centers, metal refineries, used auto dealers and shops, independent scrappers, and scrap metal buyers. Choose a buyer with experience and a long-standing reputation within the community to avoid a fly-by-the-night buyer that pays low and then disappears.

Skip the hassle of searching for the best scrap metal buying company in Indy and go straight to the most trusted source around! Contact Zore’s Recycling at 317-244-0700 to get paid instant cash on the spot for scrap metal recycling in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Is Aluminum Better Than Stainless Steel?

Because of the physical and visual similarities, stainless steel and aluminum are commonly mistaken for one another. But the technical differences between their properties make aluminum and stainless steel much different. It is important to know the differences between the two metals if you are intending to use them for an upcoming construction, fabrication, or remodeling project.

Aluminum Versus Stainless Steel:

Strength

When considering strength to weight ratio, in most cases aluminum is weaker than steel, even stainless steel. However, you must also consider that although not as strong, it is one third the weight of stainless steel. For this reason, it is commonly applied in aviation industries for manufacturing airplanes and similar commodities. But just for the record, steel is obviously stronger than aluminum.

Resistance to Corrosion

We all know that stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, namely oxidation, or rusting. For this reason, stainless steel is often used in commercial kitchen and food industries, and commonly used as the primary metal in our kitchen appliances. Stainless steel is layered with a coating of chromium that gives it it’s resistance to corrosion. As for aluminum, it retains a passivation layer, which means it is highly resistant to corrosion as well as oxidation.

Thermal Properties and Conductivity

Thermal conductivity refers to an element’s ability to hold and disburse heat. When it comes to conducting heat, aluminum is better than stainless steel. It is that simple. For this reason, aluminum metal is often used to manufacturer automotive parts that involve high key applications, such as car radiators and even air conditioning units. However, stainless steel has much better thermal properties, as it can be used at much higher temperatures and heat levels compared to aluminum, up to 400°F.

Electrical Conductivity

Aside from heat and thermal properties, there is also the consideration of electrical conductivity. When it comes to aluminum and stainless steel, aluminum takes the cake. Stainless steel is just a very poor conductor of electricity, while aluminum retains properties like high conductance and low weight ratios, making an excellent conductor of electricity.

Workability and Welding

Aluminum is much lighter and less dense than stainless steel, therefore much easier to work with and mold. However, when it comes to welding, stainless steel is better than aluminum because aluminum tends to just weaken and fall apart. It takes a master welder to work with aluminum.

Getting Started With Aluminum Can Collection and Recycling

For the home, it is very helpful to designate a certain area for aluminum recycling only. In this appointed bin, you can place all of your used beer cans, soda cans, and other aluminum items inside throughout the month. And then at the end of the month, you can see just how many you go through! It is recommended to rinse and pat dry all of your aluminum cans before tossing them into their particular bin, and then transport them to your local metal recycling company for instant cash on the spot!

The scrap metal recycling companies clean, sanitize, melt down, and reuse aluminum, as well as several other types of metal. And they usually all pay cash for recyclable scrap metal, even items like appliances and junk cars! Ask them about other metal recycling opportunities and begin collecting more than just aluminum. For example, food cans are often made of steel, another common recyclable metal.

Go Outside to Find Aluminum Cans

If you are not collecting enough aluminum throughout the month, and you wish to step it up a notch, you can venture outdoors and collect litter off the streets. You will be surprised to see just how many soda cans are tossed on the side of the road, and get wind-blown under bridges and on waterbed shores. Check your local ponds and lakes for aluminum litter, interstate ditches, bridges, and parks, as these are common places to find beverage litter.

The 7 Stages of the Scrap Metal Recycling Process

All metal can be recycled. Whether it’s copper, steel, iron, brass, or precious, it can be repurposed and reused in several different applications. But how; you ask? Continue below to learn the seven basic stages of the scrap metal recycling process, and where you can get paid cash for your ferrous and nonferrous scrap right here in Indianapolis.

The Importance of Recycling Metal

There is not an infinite supply of metal in the world. We have to mine for naturally-occurring ores, which takes a lot of time, effort, and money, plus depletes our natural preserves. It also generates a nominal amount of air pollution due to the metal refining factories. So, as you can see, it is vital to reuse and repurpose all scrap metal in order to reduce our need to mine for new ores and preserve our natural resources. Furthermore, the scrap metal industry positively contributes to our local economies, providing jobs and all sorts of community initiatives.

How Scrap Metal is Recycled:

Collection

First, scrap metal must be collected. Because of it’s value, scrap metal is not dumped in a landfill, and instead, is sold to scrap yards for recycling. The most common form of scrap metal comes from vehicles, but other sources include construction and plumbing scrap, railroad scrap, and farm scrap.

Sorting

Once the scrap metal is gathered, it is sorted according to its type. Most often, large magnetic sensors are used to weed out the ferrous (magnetic iron-containing metals) metal from the non-ferrous metal. Metal analyzing equipment is sometimes used to further detect and sort through the metal streams.

Shredding

After sorting comes processing. This generally involves shredding all of the metal so that it is lower in volume, which makes it easier to melt down. This saves a lot of energy. Aluminum and steel, however, are processed into sheets and blocks.

Melting

After shredding and processing, the scrap metal is ready to be smelted down. They are placed into large furnaces, each assigned to its own type of metal, and melted into liquid form. The time it takes for metal to reach liquidity ranges between a few minutes to a few hours.

Decontamination

After the metal has entered into a liquid form, it is basically sanitized. All residual contaminants and impurities are eliminated from the melted metal using a process known as Electrolysis.

Solidifying

Once the metal is all cleaned and purified, it is transferred via conveyor belt to cure, or turn into a solid. Then, they are transferred into molds according to the type of metal it is and its intended application. Bars are the most commonly used shape in the recycling industry.

Metal Bar Distribution

Once the molds are all done, and the metal is ready for use, they are shipped out and distributed as needed. They are hauled off to factories to be used as raw materials to manufacture new products!

Technologies Used to Sort and Separate Scrap Metal

The metal recycling process involves several steps that are equally important to the overall enterprise. From collecting and transporting materials, to sorting, processing, smelting, purifying, solidifying, re-purposing, distribution, and more, the scrap metal recycling industry works hard to ensure our natural resources are preserved. Many often wonder what it’s like taking in thousands of pounds of scrap metal and other materials, and how it is possible to separate the good stuff from the rest.

Well, continue reading to learn the top three technologies used in the business to separate scrap metal.

Eddy Current Separation

For recyclable piles that contain a mixture of materials, Eddy current separation method is used to sort metal from the plastic, paper, and textiles. During the process, electrical currents are streamed across the pile of materials, which attracts and levitates all metal, even metals that are not magnetic. From here, the metals can be further separated using additional magnetic technologies.

Magnets

All metal can be categorized as ferrous or non-ferrous, since ferrous simply refers to iron content. After all, metal either has iron in it or it doesn’t. Fortunately, ferrous metal is magnetic, making it easy to perform an initial separate of ferrous and nonferrous materials at a scrap yard. Metals and materials that do not attract to the large-scale, industrial magnets remain in the pile for further separation.

Metal Sensing

Metals that are higher in value, such as lead, copper, and precious metal, must be separated using a more technologically advanced and sophisticated process. Metal sensing technologies work best, as they are designed with innovative sensors that detect such metals through infra-red scanning and x-ray. The common types of metal sensing include pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and biotechnology.

How to Dispose of an Old Metal Shed

Perhaps it was the early onset of the harsh winter climate, or simply old age, that pushed your outdoor metal storage shed to its limit. Fortunately, the new year is upon us, which means you are ready to start making some upgrades to your property, starting with your outdoor storage shed. However, when it does come time to replace your shed with a new one, be sure to dispose of your old materials responsibly.

Your Options for Metal Shed Disposal

In some cases, disposing of something quite large, like a metal shed, can be costly and inconvenient to a homeowner. Fortunately, metal sheds are an easier commodity to get rid of since metal is 100% recyclable. Many metal recycling companies and scrap metal buyers will take an old metal shed off your hands for free. Some buyers or centers will even pay you for the metal value of the shed! So, the options are easy to choose from, but the hard choice is deciding how you are going to get your shed to a buyer.

Most often, metal recycling and scrap metal companies will pick up and haul away your metal at no extra charge. However, not all companies have the resources to provide this service, so you must be careful who you choose to do business with if you want the best amenities. Companies that do not offer free pickup and haul-away services might offer them for a small fee. But companies that do not offer such services at all place the burden of transportation on the client. In this case, you would have to take apart your shed and transport it yourself to a buyer, or you could keep in intact and transport it that way.

Taking Apart an Old Shed

You can choose to dismantle your shed before getting rid of it, but this will take some extra time and resources. You will need a specific set of tools that are congruent with the build of the shed. For instance, you won’t need a hammer if your shed is screwed together; instead, you will need a screw driver. Furthermore, it will take some experience to know how to take apart a shed efficiently and chronologically. You wouldn’t want to start with the siding and finish with the roof; would you? On top of all the manual labor and time it will take to complete a shed dismantle project, you will also have to personally haul each piece to your trailer or truck, which means more labor and more time.

It is important to be aware of the potential for injury if you choose to dismantle your metal shed on your own or with friends. Not only are there several potential dangers, such as orthopedic injuries, falling from great heights, and muscle contusions, there is also a certain degree of legal liability if someone else is injured while helping you out. As you can see, there are several factors to consider before choosing to take it apart yourself. On the other hand, there are several obvious advantages too, such as cherry-picking materials you want to keep for other projects, the ease of transportation, and more.
