The Greater Wax Moth <\/h1>\n\n\n\n
More commonly referred to as a wax worm<\/em>, the larvae\nof the Greater Wax Moth will eat any type of plastic. Back in 2017, it was\ndiscovered that these larvae could digest the stuff. Now, as recently as last\nweek, a new study published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B:\nBiological Sciences, explains how these little critters can accomplish such a\nfeat. This information about the digestive process of the wax worm is very exciting\nbecause it can help us learn how to break down plastic and reduce the waste in\nour landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scientists and researchers have figured out that the wax\nworm retains certain microorganisms in their gut microbiomes that can degrade\nand process plastic. Furthermore, they learned that these caterpillars could\nthrive on nothing but plastic for at least a year. Data from this study showed\nthat wax works actually create more of these microorganisms on a plastic-only\ndiet, meaning the more plastic they eat, the more bacteria their gut produces\nto effectively break it all down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to associate professor and chair of biology at\nBrandon University in Canada, Christophe LeMoine, \u201c”We found that wax worm\ncaterpillars are endowed with gut microbes that are essential in the plastic\nbiodegradation process (\u2026) This process seems reliant on a synergy between the\ncaterpillars and their gut bacteria to accelerate polyethylene\ndegradation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n These caterpillars are unique in that they can digest\nplastic, but they are not alone. There are at least 50 known species, referred\nto as plastivores<\/em>, that can do the same to some or equal degree. However,\nthe wax worm is the most adept.
