How to Protect Metal From Oxidation

Metal Recycling Center 317-244-0700

Metal Recycling Center 317-244-0700

Rust is a type of corrosion that can form on metal as a result of water, iron, and oxygen coming together. It ranges from shades of red, orange, and brown, and can occur as a form of iron oxide on anything that is iron or iron alloy, including steel. And this isn’t bad simply for aesthetics. Although rust is unappealing, it is also highly damaging to your metal assets. Rust leads to metal expansion, which causes vulnerabilities in the structure as a whole. This is why rust prevention should be a top priority, especially for industries that use steel products.

Do you remember the Silver Bridge Tragedy of 1967? The rust formation was so great, the steel suspension bridge suddenly collapsed in under one minute! For this reason, rust prevention is a necessary part of caring for your metal investments. Continue reading for tips on how to protect metal from rust oxidation.

Rust-Resistant Alloys

When it comes to protecting rust-resistant alloys like stainless steel and weathering steel, the umbrella caution is rain and moisture exposure. By protecting your metal assets from the elements, you are in a good position to prevent unwanted rust formation. Stainless steel contains at least 11% chrome, which provides a chromium oxide shield against damaging effects like rust. And even if the film is damaged, it will re-form again! To enhance the level of protection against stainless steel, consider adding a nickel finish. As for weathering steel, or COR-TEN, it contains up to 20% of alloying agents. This includes chromium, but also copper, phosphate, and nickel. This creates a protective coating that prevents rust formation. And COR-TEN is typically less expensive than stainless steel!

Galvanization

Steel Recycling Indianapolis Indiana

Steel Recycling 317-244-0700

Similar to the protective coatings and films provided by the above-mentioned alloy elements, galvanization also creates a coating that acts as a shield against damaging effects like oxidation. But in contrast to alloying elements, galvanization uses an outside coat of metallic zinc. The process involves either hot-dip galvanizing or electroplating. Galvanization also provides sacrificial anode that takes on any rust formation in place of the actual metal.

Bluing

Bluing is homogeneous to galvanization except rather than metallic zinc, metal is coated in a substance made from a solution of potassium nitrate, sodium hydroxide, and water. When this technique is applied, it renders metal with a bluish-looking finish, hence the name “bluing.”

Additional Options:

♻ Organic Coating like Paint, Primer, or Sealer
♻ Dry Powder Coating like Acrylic, Polyester, Nylon, Vinyl, Epoxy and Urethane.
♻ Routine Care (i.e. cleaning, drying, etc.)

How to Recycle at the Office

The office can be busy, and workdays can be long. With this being said, it is understandable that many office staffs and employees don’t really make recycling a priority on a daily basis. In this blog, we will suggest some simple and effortless ways to achieve an Eco-friendly work environment by recycling, reusing, conserving, and more!

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

Recycling is Eco-Friendly

Recycling is a wonderful, eco-friendly method to conserving our natural resources, reducing waste, and protecting our environment. Even the smallest effort is a substantial contribution to the Eco-friendly world efforts, however, recycling goes far beyond your typical blue and yellow bins for glass, paper, and soda cans. There are easy and clever ways to recycle office supplies and more on a daily basis. Here are a few effective tips to encourage and facilitate office recycling:

Office Supplies

So many office supplies are thrown away and wasted on a daily basis, when in fact, there are several items that can not only be recycled, but reused! Items like manila folders, paper clips, and binders can all be reused, over and over again. There is no need to ever throw away paper clips! Folders will deteriorate and weaken overtime, understandably, so they can be recycled as paper! Reusing binders and more can reduce office waste by hundreds of dollars each year. Office managers are encouraged to place recycling bins and a box assigned for reusable office supplies in the common area of their work space to encourage this movement.

Plastic Items

So many plastics get tossed and thrown away when they can easily be washed and reused. Water cooler cups, plastic utensils, and more can be washed in the break room and reused again. This saves a great deal of money and helps reduce office waste. Managers may also encourage employees to bring reusable drink cups or thermoses to fill up, rather than using a plastic water cooler cup once and then throwing it away. Keep a plastic recycling bin in the office as well, for those who have plastic waste to toss.

Paper

Did you know you can use both sides of a piece of paper? Well then why don’t you! Almost 90% of paper used in a typical office workplace is thrown away after using only one side. Hand notes, grocery lists, meeting notes, and more are one-sided jobs, but you can also use that other side! Flip those sheets over and use the other side, reducing your paper waste by 50 percent! Also keep a recycling bin designated for paper waste to encourage Eco-friendly recycling.

Metal

This may be news to you, but there are various scrap metal recycling companies that accept all forms of junk metal. Some companies even pay cash on the spot for recyclable metal commodities. At the office, look for anything metal that you generally toss away, and save these items in a separate been to recycle at the end of every month. Then use the cash to order pizza’s for lunch for the entire office! Recyclable metal items around the office include electronics, laptops, computers, modems, fax machines, copiers, vending machines, HVAC equipment, microwaves, answering machines, keyboards, phones, remote controls, video recording devices, video surveillance, navigation equipment, speakers, circuit boards, electric wiring, paperclips, staples, and more. Whether destroyed, damaged, or brand-new, metal recycling companies will accept these items for reprocessing purposes.

Metals to Recycle

Virtually anything that contains metal can be sold for cash and recycled. Things like food cans, electronics, vehicles, auto parts, boats, power tools, appliances, sheet metal, electrical wiring, construction equipment, lawnmowers, trailers, instruments, plumbing pipe, and more, contain valuable amounts of metal that can be extracted, recycled, and reused. Types of metal that are recyclable include:

Aluminum
Steel
Iron
Copper
Tin
Brass
Lead
Zinc
Nickle
Tungsten
Cobalt
Chromium
And more

Scrap Metal Buyers

There are various outlets for selling scrap metal in your town. The most common include scrap metal recycling centers, junk yards, used car lots, metal refineries, and independent metal buyers. Scrap an Old Air Conditioner for Cash

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

Now that temperatures are dropping and autumn is here, people are making the switch from air-conditioning to heating. And during this time, many of these same people are throwing out their old, broken-down air conditioners with plans to purchase new ones next year. So where do all these old air-conditioners go? If disposed of properly, they go to a scrap metal junkyard. Here, they are dismantled for all their valuable metal parts, and reused in various ways.

Continue reading to learn more about scrap metal air-conditioners and how to profit from recycling them.

Air Conditioner Recycling

Because air conditioners contain Freon refrigerant, it is important that they are disposed of properly. In most cases, if you want to recycle and air conditioner, you must hire a licensed professional to remove all Freon refrigerant and residual oils first. Most scrap metal recycling companies will not accept air-conditioners that still have Freon in them. This is for safety reasons. And keep in mind, it is illegal to remove the Freon yourself. Attempting to do so can result in a hefty fine from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Making Money

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

Indianapolis Metal Recycling 317-244-0700

There are several metals inside and air conditioner that make valuable and worth. These include copper, steel, aluminum, and more. The amount of money a junk AC unit will teach you depends on the condition that the metal components in the current market prices for that particular metal. The metal is measured by weight, and the weight determines the amount of cash you will receive for selling it.

Many people recycle their air-conditioners whole, which burns them a set dollar. But you can earn more if you dismantled air-conditioner first, and then sell each part individually. Since this require specialized tools and a certain degree of engineering knowledge, most people do not choose this option. It is more cost-effective to simply sell the air conditioner as a whole.

Scrap Metal Buyers

If you have an old air conditioner you wish to sell, choose a reliable resource to earn the highest investment for your scrap metal. Popular sources for selling old junk air conditioners include metal refineries, junk yards, and scrap metal recycling companies. Just be sure to select a scrap metal buyer that has experience and a good reputation within the surrounding community. These are the type of scrap metal buyers you can trust.

Small Areas of Rust

➀ Start by combining 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 cups of water. Mix them together until it forms a paste. Keep in mind that baking soda is safe for stainless steel. It is the perfect product to use for gentle, chemical-free cleaning.

➁ Using your soft cloth, apply the paste onto the affected area. Use small circular motions in the direction of the grain. It is important to always wipe in the same direction as the stainless steel grain.

➂ Finish by wiping the area clean with a damp paper towel. Repeat in all other small rusty areas.

Large Areas of Rust

❶ Start by rinsing the entire area clean with a damp paper towel.

❷ Next, sprinkle baking soda directly on top of the affected area. If the area is vertical, do your best to coat it lightly with baking soda.

❸ Allow the baking soda to sit for 30 minutes to an hour.

❹ After time is up, use your soft bristled brush to scrub the baking soda into the affected area. You can use an old toothbrush if you do not have a soft bristled brush.

Frequently Asked Questions about Appliance Recycling

Indianapolis Appliance Recycling 317-244-0700

Indianapolis Appliance Recycling 317-244-0700

Most everyone knows where to go when they need to purchase a new appliance. But not many people know where to bring them once they are old, broken, and not work fixing. Although many choose to place them on the side of the curb, they are soon faced with the reality that their trash service won’t take them.

Fortunately, most appliances can be recycled for their metal components. Your town, or a nearby city, should have a metal recycling center that you can contact for details about getting rid of junk appliances. For now, continue reading to review some common questions about recycling old appliances, and learn where to get started with your own.

Where Can I Safely Dispose of an Old or Broken Appliance?

Occasionally, you can find a used appliance store that will accept old or broken-down appliances, but often times, under several strict or unreasonable conditions. In few cases, they may charge a small fee to take them. Also, some home improvement stores sell used appliances so they buy or accept old ones that are still operational. The best place to safely discard an old or broken appliance is your city’s metal recycling center.

Will Metal Recycling Centers Take Any Appliance?

No. Most metal recycling centers are very hesitant to accept certain appliances that contain hazardous waste or toxic chemicals, such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners. However, some companies may accept these types of appliances, but for an additional charge. Other appliances, like plastic dishwashers, are not usually accepted because they contain very little-to-no metal.

How Much Does it Cost to Recycling a Junk Appliance?

In most cases, the costs related to appliance recycling mostly involve fuel costs since many places do not offer free haul away service. You are responsible of getting the appliance to the recycling center on your own if you want to recycle it for free. Otherwise, you can expect to pay a small fee, usually under $25, to have your appliance picked up and hauled off. This fee pays for the company’s overhead costs for haul-away service, including labor, fuel, insurance, and more. But the good news is that many metal processing centers pay cash for junk appliances, especially valuable ones like water heaters, furnaces, dryers, and more. Subtract the cost of haul-away service and you can still profit from recycling an appliance.

The 3 Largest Gold Mines in the United States

Gold Buyers 317-244-0700

Gold Buyers 317-244-0700

Gold has been around since the beginning of mankind, but as soon as its existence was discovered, it became one of mankind’s most prized possessions. Since the initial discovery of gold in America, the hunt for it has never stopped. In fact, as gold fields are mined more and more every day, the lust to find more gold only grows stronger. Currently, the United States is home to three gold mines that are among the largest in the entire world. Continue reading to find out where!

South Dakota

A place called Lead, South Dakota was once one of the largest (and deepest) gold fields in America. Homestake Mining Company was founded in 1877 after George Hearst purchased a primary 10-acre claim for only $10,000. Eventually, they were able to secure up to 8,000 acres! More than 40 million ounces of gold were extracted up until 2002, when Homestake Mine ceased its operation. It was later the site of several particle physics studies. Now, it is the location of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). This lab utilized all 8,000 feet of depth.

California

Also known as “Gold Country”, this western area of the Sierra Madre Mountains is one of the richest gold deposits in the world. Nowadays, it extends all along Highway 49. What started out as the Kennedy Gold Mine at Sutter’s Mill in 1870, soon turned out to be the catalyst for the infamous “California Gold Rush” of 1848 to 1855. Attracting more than 300,000 gold hunters, San Francisco’s population quickly grew from a meager 1,000 to a shocking 25,000 by 1850!

Nevada

Neighboring California, it isn’t surprising to learn that Nevada is also home to one of the country’s largest gold mines. Carlin Trend, Nevada was first discovered as a gold field in 1961 by geologist John Livermore. He was looking for a rumored “invisible gold” that was mentioned in publication written by another geologist by the name of Ralph Roberts. Invisible gold is deposited in soil by hot springs, and is so fine it can hardly be detected by older, traditional methods of panning. Places like Indonesia and China have similar “Carlin Trend-style” deposits. In 1965, Newmont Mining began their gold extracting production, and Carlin Trend has been a well-known source of gold ever since.

8 Grades of Aluminum and their Common Applications

Aluminum Recycling 317-244-0700

Aluminum Recycling 317-244-0700

Aluminum is a low-density, silver-colored metal that can be used in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. There are eight grades of aluminum, all of which retain unique qualities that differentiate them from one another. It is important to choose the right grade of aluminum for the intended application. Take a look at the several types of aluminum, and see for yourself the many uses they have in today’s manufacturing and construction world.

Pure Aluminum

Commercially pure aluminum is called Alloy 1100, and is soft and malleable. This makes it perfect for applications that call for difficult forming of metal. Although it is non-heat treatable, it can be welded using any other method. It is admired for its corrosion-resistant qualities, as well as, its ductility and color.

Alloy 2011

This grade of aluminum retains high mechanical strength, making it perfect for machining applications. Also referred to as “free machining alloy (FMA)”, this metal is a great choice for any projects that are carried out on automatic lathes, and for production of complex and intricate parts.

Alloy 2014

Also very strong and retaining high machining capabilities, Alloy 2014 is an aluminum grade metal that is commonly used for aerospace structural applications since it is highly resistant to corrosion.

Alloy 2024

This grade of aluminum is the one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys due to its high strength and fatigue resistance. Projects that require good strength to weight ratio are best matched with this grade of aluminum.

Alloy 3003

Alloy 3003 is the most commonly used grade of aluminum. It is commercially pure, but also contains manganese to increase its strength. The added manganese makes this aluminum 20% stronger than allow 1100, or pure aluminum.

Alloy 5052

Out of all the non-heat treatable grades, this grade of aluminum is the strongest, and its fatigue resistance is higher than most other grades as well. Since it has a notable resistance to salt water corrosion, it is commonly used in marine applications.

Alloy 6061

This grade of aluminum is the most versatile out of all the heat treatable aluminum alloys. Not only does it retain an excellence resistance to corrosion, it also has a wide range of useful mechanical properties. In the annealed condition, it has great malleability and can be welded by all methods, including furnace brazed.

Alloy 6063

This is commonly referred to architectural alloy since it is retains high tensile properties and excellent finishing characteristics. Also being very resistant to corrosion, this aluminum grade is a perfect match for interior and exterior architectural applications, architectural trim, and even anodizing applications.

Alloy 7075

As one of the highest strength aluminum alloys on the market, Alloy 7075 also has a great strength to weight ratio. This is why it is perfect for high stress parts. It can be shaped in the annealed condition, and heat treated too. Spot and flash welding are the recommended methods.
